Chinese can be considered as a language family itself but it is part of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. The language is originally spoken by the Han Chinese in China. There are several forms of spoken Chinese and many dialects. The standardized form is called Standard Mandarin, based on the Beijing dialect. The Chinese written language employs Chinese characters, which represents a meaningful unit of language, as well as one syllable. The number of Chinese character is well over twenty thousand, of which only ten thousand are now commonly in use. Chinese characters should not be confused with Chinese words: there are many times more Chinese words than there are characters as most Chinese words are made up of two or more different characters. Chinese vocabulary is very rich. Good news: one key feature of Chinese grammar is that all words have only one grammatical form, as Chinese does not have conjugation, declension, or any other inflection!
