Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a republic after its defeat in World War I. Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Its capital city is Vienna. Austria is a largely mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. Located in southern Central Europe, Austria's territory includes the Eastern Alps (which cover two thirds of its surface area) and the Danube region.
