DESCRIPTION :
Students attend regular classes in a local public high school and are hosted in a German host family. The carefully chosen host families open their home not as a guest, but as a new member of the family. This program allows students to experience the everyday life of German students. Students can also choose to be placed in a private boarding school, located either in St Peter Ording or in the Berlin area. They will be accommodated in the boarding quarters during weekdays and in host families on weekends and school holidays.
Classes begin at the end of August and end by the end of June.
SCHOOL SYSTEM
Secondary education in Germany includes 4 types of schools based on a pupil's ability: the Gymnasium includes the most gifted children and prepares students for university studies; the Realschule offers a more scientific emphasis for intermediary students; the Hauptschule prepares pupils for vocational education, and the Gesamtschule or comprehensive school combines the 3 approaches. Most of the students will attend the local Gymnasium or Realschule. With classes ranging from year 5 to year 13, the Gymnasium is the most difficult school type in Germany. Most of the international students will attend year 10 or 11. Please note that the decision is solely up to the school principal.
